Situated at the crossroads of L.A.’s theater, film, and television industries, the Theater Arts department at LAVC strives to integrate high professional standards with broad educational goals and maximum student opportunity; the Theater Arts faculty and staff comprise a rare combination of dedicated educators and experienced professionals, and the department’s programs mix a vibrant production schedule with a comprehensive slate of classes serving both traditional and non-traditional students and campus and community audiences.
The range of classes available for students in the department rivals the offerings of 4-year university and conservatory programs—with five levels of acting classes, five areas of design classes, beginning and advanced stagecraft and production, as well as robust playwriting and directing programs which shepherd students from beginning scenework to fully mounted productions of original student plays directed by student directors with student designers and production crews.
With long-standing ties to Southland theater companies like Theatricum Botanicum, Cabrillo Music Theatre, Pasadena Playhouse, and Musical Theater Guild, LAVC Theater Arts regularly hosts guest professionals and arranges performance and production opportunities within these professional companies to help students make the leap from coursework to career.
Our season of mainstage productions affords Valley students a host of performance, technical and design opportunities ranging across the full spectrum of world drama, classical and contemporary. From musical theater that is cutting edge (AVE Q, SPRING AWAKENING, SPELLING BEE, URINETOWN), iconic (CABARET, ANNIE, ANYTHING GOES) or unjustly neglected (LUCKY STIFF, STEEL PIER) to innovative productions of theater landmarks (AS YOU LIKE IT, IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST) and original adaptations of classic literature (PETER AND WENDY, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, ALICEn).
